Birthday letter #1

Dear Sydney,

You are 11!

This year has been a joy. I’ve enjoyed every second, learning about who you are, what makes you tick.

The learning isn’t over. We get to spend the rest of our lives figuring each other out.

What I have discovered is that you are one hardworking, young woman.

Your dedication to schoolwork is incredible.

You have boundless energy. How do you manage to spend hours jumping on the trampoline after school and never get tired?

You’re motivated to try new things and you have a bit of wanderlust. I can’t wait to share that with you. There are places I want you to see and places I want us to discover as a family.

I love how you always offer to do Zoey’s hair in the morning,

the way you appreciate order,

how you put up with my stories,

and your newfound love of Kevin Henkes books.

But mostly I just love having this front row seat, watching you grow.

Thanks for hanging out with me this year, for putting up with me through all the transitions of the last 12 months and for making your daddy who he is today. No doubt Syd, you as the first-born played a special part in making him the man he is.

I love you so much.

I look forward to your new year.

Happiest of birthday’s beautiful girl.

P.S. of course you get your own birthday song. I promise I’m not going anywhere. Just hold on, this is home.

For When She Turned 10

Dear Audrey Hope,

Double digits kiddo.

You’ve hit it.

10 is here.

Happy Birthday!!!

Before we celebrate the big day, can I gush about you for a moment?

You make your momma so incredibly proud.

You are light and love and all things good in this world.

You touch people with your generous spirit and your smile is as wide as a rainbow.

You dance through each day. You radiate energy.

Most importantly your presence in our lives is a reminder that this life is a joy to live.

As you walk your way through your tenth year there are a few things I want you to remember.

You will accomplish great things.

You will move mountains and make this world a better place.

I know this as it was embedded on my heart the moment the nurse placed your head on my chest on January 12, 2007.

Don’t give anyone the power to place doubts in your head about your abilities.

Follow the prompts of the quiet voice inside your heart. God is working in you.

Finally, don’t ever forget how loved you are. My love for you is immeasurable.

Enjoy this year and all the blessings it will bring.

Happy birthday my darling girl.

I thank God for choosing me to be your Momma.

I love you,

PS- This, this my love is what I want you to remember. Play it often and soak in the words- your birthday song.

And then she was 6

Dear Ellery Jane,

Six year ago today you completed our family; the exclamation point at the end of our sentence.

We became a team on September 24, 2010.

We our grateful and we are blessed that God brought you into our home.

Each day you delight us with your wit and your charm.

With your presence, laughter fills this space.

You’re simply the most perfect bundle of love.

Six years have flown by in the blink of an eye.

But you, more than any other, have taught me to slow down and cherish the moment.

Enjoy your day my most beautiful girl.

I cannot wait to watch your next year unfold.

I am very proud of you.

Your one and only Momma

Your favorite part of the letter (maybe next year I should begin with this);  your birthday song.  It’s a better place since you came along my girl.

August 27, 2016

Dear Sidney,

I am very proud of you.

You are an exceptional young women.

You are bright.

You are kind.

You are loving.

You have a strong moral compass that you aren’t afraid to share with others.

Some of my greatest moments of joy in life are catching you in prayer, seeing you carry Ellery and watching you stand up for Audrey when you think someone has wronged her.

I could not feel more blessed that God choose me to be your Momma. But, I have to tell you, when you leaned over the other night and whispered in my ear that I was your best friend, I also felt profoundly grateful that you see me as your confidante.

I promised you I wouldn’t get swept up today in the emotion of the moment.

This day is about celebration.

Celebrating the remarkable young woman you are becoming.

Today we will stay up late and laugh until our belly’s hurt.

We will shop and swim and eat.

We will mark the day with friends and family that are helping you be your best self.

I love you Sidney Reagan.

Happiest of birthday’s my dear.

Twelve looks really good on you.

Your one and only Momma

This year’s birthday song is one I hope carries you through the next twelve months.
